Looking Back

Hey guys! I look high but actually I’m just sick. It’s not super fun, I’ll tell ya that. It’s gross, flat-out gross.

We usually go to Wendover for New Year’s to gamble but this year I’m hoping to have a more spiritual holiday. Crazy thought, I know. The thing is, if I’m going to spend New Year’s Day looking forward, I figure, I better spend New Year’s Eve looking back. Bryan and I are headed north to Idaho in hopes that being out of Smog Lake City helps clear up my lungs and sinuses.

So much has happened this year that I am grateful for. I was able to travel to both  coasts, Washington DC and Los Angeles for work, and locally for pleasure. It’s funny because I was TERRIFIED to turn 30, but I feel like that when I really started to figure things out and so far, 31 has been even better.

Earlier in the year I started down a spiritual course. It was really fueled by my Happiness Project but it morphed into something much less pragmatic which is why I kind of stopped blogging about it. I finished May Cause Miracles and followed that by devouring The Fire Starter Sessions. Both of the books impacted me in such a powerful way. I was finally able to stop looking to other people to make me happy and started looking for it within myself. I’m far from figuring it all out but I at least feel like I’m on the right track. I still refer to both of those books often but now I’m working my way slowly through A Course In Miracles. I know that it is not right for everyone but it feels right for me.

Then of course, Bryan and I got engaged. Which is amazing and I already told you about so I won’t go into it again here.

I was also so lucky to be a bridesmaid in my dear friends wedding. Thank you Laura! It meant so much to me to be a part of it.

The other wonderful thing that happened is that I finally opened my online jewelry shop. Now, there isn’t much there now. But, I’ve designed a collection of jewelry inspired by the Great Salt Lake. I am so excited to launch it! I have a bazillion pieces carved in wax that I am just dying to cast and show you.

Then there was the Christmas miracle in Utah. I’m so curious to hear what my out-of-state friends have heard and think about this. Utah’s constitution had an amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman. And well, I honestly thought the hell I don’t believe in would freeze over before there was marriage equality in Utah. Anyways, you can read the news to get the full details but basically some same-sex couples sued over it and a federal judge declared the amendment unconstitutional. At the time his decision was announced we didn’t have an Attorney General, so ever since Friday afternoon on December 20, we have had marriage equality in Utah! The governor and other officials are freaking out and trying to request a stay on same-sex marriages until their appeal is heard but so far it keeps getting denied by the courts. I am SO so so so thrilled for all the couples that have been married. We know that the marriages may have to stop for a period of time but if the case goes to The Supreme Court I just can’t imagine they will rule any differently than they did in California. And now, years since the stupid amendment was passed, about 71% of Utahns support same-sex marriage.  It just makes me so happy.

Last but not least, and it will certainly sound lame after marriage equality but it was big for me; I figured out the value in setting time aside for myself and FINALLY got my hair and nails did. See above, its gray, my dream color and I am determined to make and KEEP appointments to maintain it. I also managed to go to the doctor and see a lung specialist for my asthma. She told me to move (Northern Utah is the most polluted place in the country during the Winter months). I can’t figure that one out yet but now you understand why we’re spending the biggest party holiday of the year in a tiny town in Idaho, clean air!

Happy Holidays dolls (and gents)! Now please tell me, what made 2013 awesome for you AND what are you doing to ring in the New Year?

PS Thank you Mama and Dad for watching my terrible twosome!
