The Eye Has To Travel

I did the unspeakable. My boyfriend wanted to take me on a movie date and I insisted we go see Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel, a documentary about Vogue’s ex-editor-in-chief. It was probably one of those things I should have reserved for a girls night but I’ve been desperate to see it and I just couldn’t wait, movies are a rare thing in our life. He chuckled enough through the film that I think even he was a little inspired by her imagination.
Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel
If you are a fashion lover and you haven’t seen it, I would suggest you go see it, like right now. Seriously, if you live in SLC go look up the Broadway, it’s playing there and they have new comfy seats. I left the theater wanting more, her memoirs, D.V., are now officially on my Xmas wish list. But I also left feeling inspired, not just do go ahead and do the little fashion/beauty things I’ve always wanted to do but never dared. But also inspired to make the best life possible for myself. After all, according to Diana, “There’s only one very good life and that’s the life you know you want and you make it yourself.”

It occurred to me that the really great women of fashion, created themselves, not just Diana, but Coco Chanel, Anna Wintour, the list goes on… so it seems odd to me that so many of us, are shy of creating the life we want. Maybe I’m only talking about myself here, but I seem to have a problem going after what I want, it’s like I think I don’t deserve it or something. Diana Vreeland was not considered beautiful, had no higher education and yet she had something that was necessary for success, she knew what she wanted.

With all of that red, her terrifying demands on her staff and her imagination, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the Queen in Through the Looking Glass. I don’t think she would mind the comparison.

So, in honor the Queen and Mrs. Vreeland in her first column for Harper’s Bazaar, Why Don’t You.. Why don’t we write a little Why Don’t You list? I’ll start.

Why don’t you:

  1. Wear black lip gloss (I say this because I own some.)
  2. Drink coffee at midnight
  3. Go play at a trampoline park
  4. Wear a tutu to work
  5. Eat vegan caviar for breakfast
  6. Believe impossible things

Now it’s your turn 😉

  1. black lip gloss? sounds intriguing! haven’t heard of it but i might have to look for some 🙂

i love the idea of “creating yourself”…it seems like the older we get the more we try to fit in when it should be just the opposite. know what you want & go after it….that’s what’s up.
