Last month I participated in World Fire Cider Action Day and created my first batch homemade fire cider. Fire Cider is an old herbal vinegar to cure or prevent a cold. Rosemary Gladstar, an herbalist created the recipe and has been giving it out freely to help people heal themselves with food. You can find it here.
Herbalists have made and sold their own versions of Fire Cider for years but a few years ago, one brand trademarked it and has been sending cease and desist orders to other smaller herbalists. It’s all really ridiculous, don’t try and trademark a recipe that’s been around for years that you didn’t create – duh.
It takes about a month for all of the ingredients to infuse the vinegar. Once that’s done, you strain it and sweeten it with honey. But….. I don’t use honey because it’s not vegan. So for my version, I used 1/4 of maple syrup. I’ve never tried it with honey so I have nothing to compare it to but I’ve been taking a half a shot glass a day and let me tell you – it gets the blood flowing.
