World Spay Day

Happy Caturday friends! I just wanted to let you all know that Tuesday February 26 is World Spay Day. It might sound weird but if there is one thing that I am passionate about, it is spaying and neutering companion animals. At my job I work closely with shelters and rescue groups all across the state and I can tell you first hand that if there is one thing the United States doesn’t need, it’s another litter of kittens or puppies.

There are a lot of misconceptions about spaying or neutering. I speak with a lot of people who want to breed their dog because their dog is so wonderful and they love their dog so much. I have news, if my parents were expecting a mini-me when they set out to have me, boy were they in for a shock. Just because you have a dog with a wonderful temperament, doesn’t mean you will end up with carbon copy puppies.

I also run into a lot of people who want to breed their cat or dog as a way to teach their children about the birds and the bees. How about taking them to the shelter and teaching them about community involvement instead?

It’s been estimated that between 3 and 4 million animals are killed in shelters a year in the United States, that number is far too high to ever justify bringing more cats and dogs into the world. If you want to live in a No Kill community, that change starts with you. If you LOVE animals, you can help prevent them from being killed. Adopt from an animal shelter instead of buying from a pet store or website. Spay or neuter your pets. Keep your animal for is lifetime. If you can’t adopt, consider volunteering for a local shelter or rescue group or making a donation.

If you need assistance getting your pets fixed, talk to me, there are all sorts of programs to help you out. To find out more about World Spay Day, head on over to the Humane Society.

If you ever have any questions about adoption or helping shelter animals please feel free to ask me any time. Happy Spay Day!
